{"id":70,"date":"2017-12-05T16:40:05","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T21:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/comics\/?p=70"},"modified":"2018-04-12T15:03:15","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T19:03:15","slug":"resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/comics\/2017\/12\/05\/resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Comics Studies Resources @UNT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/\">UNT Libraries<\/a><\/strong> has a number of resources for folks interested in studying comics for research, coursework, collecting, or plain old pleasure reading.\u00a0 Below are a few places to get started.<\/p>\r\n<p>These aren&#8217;t the only places you can find useful information, though, since every discipline may have its own approaches to comics as art, as literature, as a form of education, as digital media, as an industry,as\u00a0 a social or cultural phenomena, etc.&#8211;so it may be worth looking at books or articles in those areas of study as well (consult with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/subject-librarians\">subject librarian<\/a>, if you aren&#8217;t sure where to begin). If you have links you\u2019d like to add, just contact the subject librarian listed on that page.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>UNT Graphic Novels Collection<\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/library-locations\/floor-maps\/wil3.png\">3rd Floor Willis Library<\/a> (across from public access computers)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>This is our browsable, circulating collection of graphic novels, comics anthologies, and other books related to comics studies. Come sit and relax in a window seat while you peruse some of the classics, like <em>Maus<\/em> or <em>Watchmen<\/em>, or catch up on some of your favorite series, like <em>The Walking Dead<\/em> or <em>Saga<\/em>.\u00a0 You may also find a few unknown treasures here that you\u2019ll enjoy.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/\">UNT General Collection<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>This is where you\u2019ll find books <em>about <\/em>comics and comics studies\u2014especially scholarly or critical studies, histories, and guides. The best place to begin a search of the general collection is in the Library\u2019s online catalog. There are some suggested search terms on the Comics Studies Guide\u2019s \u201cResearching Comics\u201d page. But if you like to browse, you can begin on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/library-locations\/floor-maps\/wil3.png\">3rd Floor of Willis Library<\/a> under the following call numbers: PN 6700-6790 (Comics history, theory, and scholarship) or NC 1700-1790 (Cartoons, animation, and manga).<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>UNT Comic Books Collection<\/strong>&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/our-collections\">Special Collections<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/library-locations\/floor-maps\/wil4.png\">4th Floor Willis Library<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The Comic Books Collection at the University of North Texas was developed after librarian Doug Campbell\u2019s donation of 1,600 comic books on behalf of his grandmother, Floydine Campbell (1917-2014), who purchased many of them at her job at the Leonard Pharmacy in Leonard, Texas (see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/events\/special-collections\/comic-books-action\">\u201cComic Books in Action\u201d<\/a> exhibit from 2014). The collection also includes the 98\u00a0Classics Illustrated\u00a0comic books donated by Clifford and Shaun Seibel in 2008. These materials are available by special request only, and a research appointment is required to view them.<\/p>\r\n<p>Patrons who want to request materials from Special Collections should visit the website to view policies and request procedures: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\">http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/special-collections<\/a><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Government comics<\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/eagle-commons-library\">Eagle Commons Library<\/a>, Sycamore Hall, 1st Floor<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Many people aren\u2019t aware of the wide range of government publications that have included comics, comic art, or information on legal cases or government hearings involving comics. Our government documents collection includes a number of materials related to these and other topics.
