{"id":17,"date":"2014-06-23T11:39:45","date_gmt":"2014-06-23T11:39:45","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2015-03-26T09:07:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T15:07:58","slug":"17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/scienceretentionlibrarian\/2014\/06\/23\/17\/","title":{"rendered":"Increase STEM Career Awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/microsites\/ostp\/pcast-executive-report-final_2-13-12.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><em>Engage to Excel<\/em> executive report<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> issued by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;frm=1&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CB0QFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.whitehouse.gov%2Fadministration%2Feop%2Fostp%2Fpcast&amp;ei=MoOkU92eKIelqAa21oJA&amp;usg=AFQjCNG4JCNHw-PsmH-bThwJoLWI8D6qQg&amp;sig2=MfrWK_GQwuZMaYmG1fsuuA&amp;bvm=bv.69411363,d.b2U\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">President\u2019s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> in 2012 made five recommendations to produce one million STEM graduates by 2022. Recommendation 4 is \u201c[e]ncourage partnerships among stakeholders to diversify pathways to STEM careers\u201d (p.7) and related Action 4-4 is \u201c[improve] data provided by the Department of Education and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to STEM students, parents, and the greater community on STEM disciplines and the labor market\u201d (p.8). <\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">To this librarian\u2019s ears, Action 4-4 sounds like a call to create greater access and promotion of STEM career information, allowing students and their parents to make better decisions about entering STEM disciplines. \u00a0At least one study (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Talking_About_Leaving_Why_Undergraduates.html?id=e3h48xnglrUC\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Talking about Leaving<\/span><\/a><\/em>) suggests that many undergraduates enter STEM disciplines based on little or stereotypical career information, and leave STEM without accurate information about the career options they could have pursued.<\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">The Bureau of Labor Statistics continues to publish the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Occupational Outlook Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">, which is full of great information about the requirements, pay, and job outlook for occupations; however, even the online version is still text-based and could appeal more to young adults with some media elements. In my search for engaging information about biology careers, I have come across these interviews of STEM professionals that are worth sharing with undergraduates:<\/span><\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"http:\/\/icould.com\/watch-career-videos\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Career Videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> at iCould.com. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3aT7jY6p3EM&amp;list=PLT9iLj3VngaGsGTa55732T0uYqu_mtSDq\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Career Profiles \u2013 Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">, Ontario Agri-Food Education Inc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/nova\/blogs\/secretlife\/video-profiles\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">The Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">, NOVA<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Librarians can help students make informed decisions about entering or leaving STEM disciplines by discovering and sharing similar resources.
