{"id":21,"date":"2014-07-03T15:26:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T15:26:54","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2015-03-26T09:07:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T15:07:58","slug":"21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/scienceretentionlibrarian\/2014\/07\/03\/21\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessment Scale for STEM Undergraduate Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/precious-hardy\/70\/553\/32\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Precious Hardy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lincolnu.edu\/web\/academics\/aruguete-mara\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Mara Aruguete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> at Lincoln University of Missouri have presented a promising assessment tool in \u201cNeeds Assessment in STEM Disciplines: Reliability, Validity and Factor Structure of the Student Support Needs Scale (SSNS),\u201d published in a 2014 issue of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/toc\/caeh20\/current\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Assessment &amp; Evaluation in Higher Education<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">. The scale assesses six areas of support from the student and institution: Knowledge, Performance, Motivation, Self-Efficacy, Tools\/Environment, and Feedback. In tests of reliability and validity, the instrument demonstrates positive relationships between the SNSS score and both overall and major GPA. The authors are encouraging college and universities to administer the tool to STEM students, especially minority students, to pinpoint support weaknesses and guide spending of funds to improve retention of STEM undergraduates.<\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I was hoping the academic libraries would be represented in the Tools\/Environment section, but we are only vaguely there in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> statement to be answered with a Likert scale: \u201cThe university has many institutional processes that promote success in my major\u201d (p. 557). Looks like we need to better market libraries as a major source of support for all students, as important as career advising, which is specifically mentioned in the instrument.
