That\u2019s the topic I\u2019ll be exploring in this blog, and I hope you\u2019ll join me in the undertaking.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\">It\u2019s widely known in U.S. higher education there are <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationnation.com\/index.cfm?objectid=11B909B6-B49D-11E1-9BAC000C296BA163\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\">not enough science majors \u201cin the pipeline\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"> to meet the needs of an increasingly technological society and competitive global economy. The President\u2019s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology called for one million additional STEM college graduates over the next decade in their <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/microsites\/ostp\/pcast-executive-report-final_2-13-12.pdf\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\">2012 report<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\">. How can librarians contribute to this initiative?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\">Whatever your perspective is on this topic &#8211; including the view that academic librarians shouldn\u2019t be in the retention business at all &#8211; join me on this exploration. I suspect we\u2019ll discover that science librarians already contribute much to student persistence.
