{"id":8,"date":"2013-11-26T11:58:03","date_gmt":"2013-11-26T11:58:03","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2015-03-26T09:07:59","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T15:07:59","slug":"8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/scienceretentionlibrarian\/2013\/11\/26\/8\/","title":{"rendered":"The STEM Iceberg"},"content":{"rendered":"&nbsp;\r\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> recently published a <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-STEM-Crisis-Reality-or\/142879\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">lengthy article<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> entitled, \u201cThe STEM Crisis: Reality or Myth?\u201d Various experts in science policy and labor trends contributed their views, and in the end, I was left wondering whether I should even continue this blog. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">But then I started reading a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Talking_About_Leaving_Why_Undergraduates.html?id=e3h48xnglrUC\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">major study<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> of STEM majors published in 1997, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Talking about Leaving: Why Undergraduates Leave the Sciences<\/em>, by Seymour and Hewitt. It became clear to the researchers after interviewing 460 STEM undergraduates that switching majors is merely the tip of \u201cthe problem iceberg\u201d (pp. 46-47). Both students who switched to non-science majors and those who stuck with STEM disciplines identified many of the same dissatisfactions with STEM disciplines, two of the top ones being, inadequate help with academic problems and advising, and discovering that their reasons for choosing a STEM major were inappropriate. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">STEM crisis, or no, there is still a need for academic librarians to investigate how we can contribute to improving the educational experience of STEM undergraduates.
