Hughes Reading Room some of our artist book acquisitions through the years! In the spirit of <a href=\"https:\/\/library.unt.edu\/news\/2026\/01-21-rethinking-the-codex\/\">\u201cRethinking the Codex\u201d<\/a>, this selection of books shows a small number of the myriad and unique artist books our vault contains using non-traditional materials or non-traditional shape language. These acquisitions come from students, community members, and professional artist book makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/02\/Image-13-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's books on display\" class=\"wp-image-281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/02\/Image-13-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/02\/Image-13-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/02\/Image-13-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/02\/Image-13-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/special-collections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/02\/Image-13.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Julie VonDerVellen\u2018s \u201c26.2 miles\u201d (a pair of paper shoes) pictured on display in the reading room.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kathy Lovas\u2019 \u201cOne of Two\u201d, Candace Hicks\u2019 \u201cCommon Threads\u201d and Howard Spillman\u2019s \u201cMy Tooth Fairy Pillow\u201d represent textile-based books, trading in paper and ink for fabric mediums like cloth, yarn, and handkerchiefs with Xerox-transferred images; others focus on the structural, model-like approach to making artist books with examples such as Julie VonDerVellen\u2018s \u201c26.2 miles\u201d (a pair of paper shoes), Edward Hutchin\u2019s \u201cDo Sit Down!\u201d (a miniature model chair with a book inside), and Julie Chen\u2019s \u201cChrysalis\u201d (a sculptural book object in the shape of a faceted oloid that is held closed with magnets). Come by the Sarah T. Hughes Reading Room before then to see these amazing examples in person!
