{"id":184,"date":"2015-11-02T21:11:44","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T21:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/tdnp\/?p=184"},"modified":"2015-11-02T21:45:19","modified_gmt":"2015-11-02T21:45:19","slug":"hopping-into-the-space-and-time-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/tdnp\/2015\/11\/02\/hopping-into-the-space-and-time-machine\/","title":{"rendered":"Hopping into the Space and Time Machine"},"content":{"rendered":"As the world prepares for &#8220;Star Wars: The Force Awakens&#8221; to come out on December 18th, we in the Digital Newspaper Unit are hopping into our newspaper time machine to check into the first <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth332437\/m1\/4\/zoom\/?q=%22star%20wars%22&amp;zoom=3&amp;lat=1560&amp;lon=2020&amp;layers=BT\" target=\"_blank\">Star Wars<\/a> movie reviews and news.\u00a0 The movie was initially distributed in limited release in May 1977.\u00a0 As the article appearing in the Rio Grande Herald, titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth194615\/m1\/3\/zoom\/?q=%22star%20wars%22&amp;zoom=4&amp;lat=6216&amp;lon=1393&amp;layers=BT\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;&#8216;Star Wars&#8217; Raking in Millions&#8221;<\/a> summarizes, Star Wars first opened to 45 theaters, and in 12 days brought in $5.2 million in sales, sweeping the world and almost doubling Fox Studio&#8217;s stock at the time of the movie&#8217;s release.\n\nFrom UNT&#8217;s own <em>NT Daily<\/em>, we have a <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth332436\/m1\/3\/zoom\/?q=%22Star%20Wars%22&amp;zoom=4&amp;lat=6027.5&amp;lon=3489&amp;layers=BT\" target=\"_blank\">terrific review<\/a> that includes the sketch in this blog post, on the left.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/tdnp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/11\/NTDaily-StarWars-Drawing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"227\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-185\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/tdnp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2015\/11\/NTDaily-StarWars-Drawing.jpg\" alt=\"Star Wars sketch, NT Daily, June 30, 1977\" \/><\/a>According to the review, &#8220;&#8216;Star Wars&#8217; features the most cosmic special effects in memory.&#8221; Unrelated but also interesting: on the same page of the review is a photo, &#8220;Dueling Banjo?&#8221; which displays a young David Iles with a terrific &#8217;70s hairdo, wielding what appears to be a shovel-shaped sword.\u00a0 (David Iles also happens to be the sculptor of the wildlife statues outside the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unt.edu\/northtexan\/untnews.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Education, Science, and Technology Building on the UNT Denton Campus.<\/a>)\n\nOf course, &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; came out before most of its top-billed cast were famous&#8211;except for Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing, and newspapers made certain to help movie-goers answer questions like, <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth395188\/m1\/17\/zoom\/?q=%22Star%20Wars%22&amp;zoom=4&amp;lat=1196&amp;lon=3087&amp;layers=BT\" target=\"_blank\">who was that tough guy from American Graffiti?<\/a>\n\nThe Rice Thresher, out of Rice University, gives us an admiring and thoughtful review that especially praises the <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth245338\/m1\/6\/zoom\/?q=%22star%20wars%22&amp;zoom=3&amp;lat=4297.5&amp;lon=1505.5&amp;layers=BT\" target=\"_blank\">richness of the special effects<\/a>.\u00a0 This review also notes newcomers Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.\n\nAs we move toward the end of the year in our time machine, it appears that &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; gifts were at the top of most children&#8217;s wish lists by the end of 1977, from <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth566684\/hits\/?q=%22star%20wars%22\" target=\"_blank\">Bellaire,<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth568690\/hits\/?q=%22star%20wars%22\" target=\"_blank\">Cedar Hill<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth390775\/hits\/?q=%22star%20wars%22\" target=\"_blank\">Crosbyton<\/a>.\n\nNot everyone was <a href=\"http:\/\/texashistory.unt.edu\/ark:\/67531\/metapth332453\/m1\/4\/zoom\/?q=%22star%20wars%22&amp;zoom=3&amp;lat=5997&amp;lon=2269&amp;layers=BT\" target=\"_blank\">sad to change out movies at the theater<\/a>.
