When news broke of actor Tim Curry’s passing, fans around the world reflected on his unforgettable performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). At UNT, Rocky Horror was more than a movie. For decades, students attended midnight screenings, dressed in costume, carried participation props, shouted callbacks, performed alongside the screen, competed in costume contests, and raised money for charitable causes. Records preserved in the University Archives reveal a surprisingly long and vibrant history of Rocky Horror on campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rocky Horror Arrives at North Texas<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Rocky Horror arrived at North Texas State University surprisingly early. A 1978 North Texas Daily article announced a campus screening of the cult classic, making it the earliest documented reference identified so far. By 1983, the tradition had already evolved beyond a simple film showing. Students attending midnight screenings in the Lyceum were encouraged to wear costumes and bring rice, toast, water, and other props associated with Rocky Horror audience participation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A Campus Phenomenon<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n By the mid-1980s, Rocky Horror had become a campus phenomenon. In November 1985, approximately 800 students gathered for a midnight screening in the University Union Lyceum. The crowd grew so large that university police were called to assist with crowd control. The excitement surrounding the event was so intense that a student later submitted a public letter to the editor apologizing for cutting in line while trying to get into the showing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody Sits Still During the Show<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n The late 1980s saw Rocky Horror become an established campus tradition. University Program Council screenings encouraged audience participation, allowing food, drinks, and small props. During All-Night Absurdity events, live performers acted alongside the film while audience members raised newspapers during rain scenes, tossed toast and rice, and shouted callbacks. Yearbook coverage described audience participation as ‘astounding’ and documented the enthusiasm of those attending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A Perennial Favorite<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n By the early 1990s, Rocky Horror had become a perennial favorite. Students attended annual Halloween screenings, purchased prop bags, arrived in costume, and looked forward to the event every year. A 1992 Aerie article noted Rocky Horror’s ‘somewhat scandalous existence at North Texas,’ while another yearbook described it as a ‘perennial favorite’ that required extra planning from organizers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Still Doing the Time Warp<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n The tradition continued into the 2000s. UPC-sponsored screenings partnered with organizations such as the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, the Social Work Student Association, and GLAD. Costume contests, participation kits, canned-food drives, and fundraising efforts for AIDS Services of North Texas became regular features. In 2009, the Department of Dance and Theatre mounted a full production of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, bringing the tradition from the screen to the stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Meat Loaf Connection<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n UNT also has a direct connection to the film itself. Marvin Lee Aday, better known as Meat Loaf, attended North Texas State University before launching his music and acting career. In The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Meat Loaf portrayed Eddie, whose performance of ‘Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul)’ remains one of the film’s most memorable moments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n More Than a Movie<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n What emerges from these records is not simply the history of a movie. It is the story of generations of UNT students creating community through participation, performance, humor, and a healthy appreciation for the absurd.
