Here are just a few government documents dealing with this perennial mystery:<\/p>\r\n<h3><em>Romances and Love Stories<\/em><\/h3>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/nls\/\">National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped<\/a> (NLS) is a subagency of the Library of Congress that lends books and magazines in the form of sound recordings or braille publications to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/nls\/eligible.html\">eligible<\/a> U.S. residents or U.S. citizens living abroad. Although they don\u2019t provide music recordings, music scores are available in braille or large print editions, and instructional materials are available in audio format for learning to play various instruments.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/2027\/mdp.39015037426494\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: left; margin: 6px 10px 6px 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/untdocsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/migrated\/7\/romances.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of Romances and Love Stories bibliography\" width=\"159\" height=\"206\" \/>Romances and Love Stories<\/em><\/a> is an annotated bibliography of selected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.romancewiki.com\/Romance_Genre\">romance novels<\/a> available from the NLS. The lists are divided into five categories, with a plot synopsis provided for each book (which might give you some ideas for writing your own romance novel!). If you&#8217;re not disabled you won&#8217;t qualify to borrow the books from NLS, but these are commercially-published books, many of which are readily available from public libraries and bookstores.<\/p>\r\n<p>These are the categories:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Prolific Authors<\/strong> (authors who have five or more works listed)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/encyclopedia\/entertainment\/gothic-romance.html\"><strong>Gothic Romances<\/strong><\/a> (featuring a threat to a na\u00efve heroine and frequently a gloomy, isolated setting)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Regency_romance\"><strong>Regency Romances<\/strong><\/a> (set in England during the Regency period of 1811\u20131820 and usually a comedy of manners with a plot and style reminiscent of Jane Austen)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlequin.com\/store.html?cid=227\"><strong>Harlequin Romances<\/strong><\/a> (uplifting escapist fare featuring realistic, relatable women and strong, deeply desirable men)<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>More Romances<\/strong> (a catch-all for anything else in the romance novel genre)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><em>Mary Queequeesue\u2019s Love Story<\/em><\/h3>\r\n<p>In 1972 the\u00a0Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory\u00a0(now <a href=\"http:\/\/educationnorthwest.org\/\">Education Northwest<\/a>) developed a community-based reading and language arts program especially for Indian children. Funding came from the National Institute of Education (a federal agency later replaced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/pubs\/TeachersGuide\/oeri.html\">Office of Educational Research and Improvement<\/a>, which was itself replaced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/\">Institute of Education Sciences<\/a>). Out of this program came the <a href=\"http:\/\/iii.library.unt.edu\/search\/?searchtype=X&amp;SORT=D&amp;searcharg=indian+reading+series&amp;searchscope=12\">Indian Reading Series<\/a> of stories relevant to Indian culture, written by local Indian authors and illustrated by Indian artists.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin: 6px 10px 6px 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/untdocsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/migrated\/7\/mary-love-story.JPG\" alt=\"Cover of Mary Queequeesue's Love Story\" width=\"176\" height=\"226\" \/><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/permanent.access.gpo.gov\/gpo14216\/book06.pdf\"><em>Mary Queequeesue\u2019s Love Story<\/em><\/a>, one of the titles in this series, tells the story of Mary Queequeesue, who loses her husband to a younger woman. An elderly medicine woman helps her perform a ritual to bring him back, and eventually everyone lives happily ever after. It\u2019s an engrossing, culturally authentic story, although some parents and teachers might find it rather steamy stuff for a children\u2019s picture book\u2014maybe a little <em>too<\/em> educational! An accompanying <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.educationnorthwest.org\/indianreading\/5\/manual_53-54.pdf\">teacher\u2019s manual<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.educationnorthwest.org\/indianreading\/5\/activity_8A-8B.pdf\">activity cards<\/a> are provided to help explain the cultural references.<\/p>\r\n<h3><em>Love Goes West<\/em><\/h3>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/federal-theatre-project\/\">Federal Theatre Project<\/a> was an ambitious effort by the FDR administration to provide jobs for theatre professionals during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Established under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/general-article\/dustbowl-wpa\/\">Works Progress Administration<\/a> (WPA) in 1935 and lasting until 1939, when its funding was terminated, the FTP was responsible for several remarkably inventive theatrical productions and employed thousands of actors, directors, playwrights, designers, vaudeville artists, and stage technicians.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/untdocsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/migrated\/7\/love-goes-west-script.jpg\" alt=\"Love Goes West script\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/untdocsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/migrated\/7\/love-goes-west-set.jpg\" alt=\"Love Goes West set design\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iii.library.unt.edu\/record=b1315366~S12\"><em>Love Goes West<\/em><\/a> is one of many scripts that were written by playwrights hired by the FTP. A brief vaudeville skit with a twist ending, it tells the story of several cowboys in the old west fighting violently over the new schoolmarm, who is the first woman they\u2019ve seen in years. It includes a full script and a set design. This rare work is not currently available online, but a copy is available for checkout from the UNT Libraries <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.unt.edu\/government-documents\">Government Documents Department<\/a>. Ask for it at the Third Floor Service Desk in Willis Library.<\/p>\r\n<h3>The Cut Paper Heart Forever Stamp<\/h3>\r\n<p>Since 1973, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usps.com\/\">United States Postal Service<\/a> has issued every year about this time a new limited-edition commemorative stamp on the theme of love, affectionately known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mohawkconnects.com\/feltandwire\/2013\/02\/14\/art-director-derry-noyes-reflects-on-40-years-of-love-stamps\/\">Love stamp<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin: 6px 10px 6px 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.unt.edu\/untdocsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/migrated\/7\/love-stamp.jpg\" alt=\"Cut Paper Heart Forever Stamp\" width=\"154\" height=\"200\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/uspsstamps.com\/stories\/heart-with-a-history\">Cut Paper Heart Forever Stamp<\/a> is this year\u2019s Love stamp. It was designed by USPS Art Director <a href=\"http:\/\/uspsstamps.com\/people\/antonio-alcala\">Antonio Alcal\u00e1\u00a0<\/a>and features a digital illustration by <a href=\"http:\/\/uspsstamps.com\/people\/q-cassetti\">Q. Cassetti<\/a> inspired by the traditional folk-art of <em>Liebesbriefe<\/em> (\u201clove letters\u201d).
