Smokey Bear<\/a> will be turning 70 this August, but birthday celebrations are already underway. Smokey\u2019s Cascade Campout<\/a>, an annual national convention sponsored by the Smokey Bear Association<\/a> and the Des Chutes Historical Museum<\/a>, took place in Bend, Oregon on April 23 through 25.<\/p>\r\n

Although the UNT Government Documents Department members did not attend the 2014 Smokey Bear Association conference, the Department does boast a unique\u00a0collection of Smokey realia<\/a>, some of which was photographed by Betty Monterroso and curated by Dr. Cathy Sassen. The Department followed the Conference events via Facebook postings from Tami Hert, a former UNT Texas Documents librarian\u00a0who currently heads the Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections<\/a> at the University of Wyoming Libraries<\/a>. It is alleged that members of the Department even sang the song \u201cSmokey the Bear<\/a>\u201d in support of the conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\"UNT\r\n

The star of our Smokey Bear collection is this 8 1\/2\u201d articulated plastic action figure with fabric jeans, a hat, and a shovel, manufactured in Hong Kong and sold by the popular toy company R. Dakin & Co. (now merged with Applause Inc.<\/a>).<\/p>\r\n

Also visible here are a vintage jigsaw puzzle still in its cellophane wrapper; The True Story of Smokey Bear<\/em><\/a>, a comic book relating Smokey\u2019s origin; a 40th<\/sup> birthday card from the Dallas Public Library; and several stamps.<\/p>\r\n\"UNT\r\n

This photo includes the 1952 song \u201cSmokey the Bear\u201d by Steve Nelson and Walter E. \u201cJack\u201d Rollins<\/a> (who also wrote \u201cHere Comes Peter Cottontail\u201d and \u201cFrosty the Snowman\u201d); a stamped-metal\u00a0 Junior Forest Ranger Badge; and a poster advertising Smokey\u2019s 50th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\r\n\"UNT\r\n

The newspaper clipping off to the left is an article about the death of the real Smokey Bear at the National Zoo in 1976.
