Then, during the early morning of March 17, with no time to lose, they skedaddled, joining the mass exodus known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Runaway_Scrape\">Runaway Scrape<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>The battle for independence continued until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/treasures\/republic\/san-jacinto.html\">April 21<\/a>, when the Mexican army was defeated and Santa Anna captured. For the next decade Texas existed as an independent republic, until on December 28, 1845 it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/ref\/abouttx\/annexation\/index.html\">admitted into the United States<\/a> as the 28<sup>th<\/sup> state of the Union.<\/p>\r\n<p>Here are some ways you can celebrate the anniversary of Texas Independence:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Read the full text of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/treasures\/republic\/declare-01.html\">Texas Declaration of Independence<\/a> at the Texas State Library and Archives Web site.
