Our Comics Studies at UNT community has recently been joined by a new addition: a newly-created, registered student-organization devoted to making and sharing comics! We’re excited to have these student creators join our already-active community of scholars, teachers, students, and creators of comics at UNT. Read more below about their work.
The UNT Comic Book club is a student-run organization, where we work on creating several different mini comics that are put in a book at the end of each semester!
The groups for each mini comic make progress throughout the semester, attending meetings run by the officers, who give presentations on each stage to help the students bring their ideas to life. This includes posting online resources in our Discord server, as well as giving feedback directly and answering questions at our meetings.
So, how does it all work?
At the beginning of each semester, each member gets to submit a comic prompt, and then we vote on the ones we like! Once we have a few high ranking prompts, we sort the members into groups based on which project they want to work on, and get started. The joy of the process is getting to see how the ideas change and grow as each person puts their mark on the story.
The club provides the groups with a schedule to work on the different stages of the process, and each one gets a digital file to store their work in, so all members of the group can access it. The officers double check the different steps to make sure everything fits together smoothly, and then at the end we put all the comics together and send it to an independent printing company!
Our ultimate goal is to help aspiring comic creators learn important skills to take into future projects, as well as adding to their portfolios. We keep track of the process on our official UNT Comic Book Club Instagram page, as well as putting a copy of our book into UNT’s permanent collection. This way, members can have something to officially show for their work!
Our club format is open, so that our lessons can also help independent artists and writers working on personal projects as well. We encourage all people with an interest in making comics to check us out!
